“Successful art changes our understanding of the conventions
by altering our perceptions.  --  Banal ideas cannot be rescued by
beautiful execution.“

::: Sol Lewitt :::
Artist Statement:

Always with me is a large tin of old crayons that I used as a child.  With the crayons comes a fond memory of my mother
buying me an over-sized coloring book featuring birds of the world.  I spent hours coloring every bird as perfectly as I could
making sure that I stayed within the lines.  It was after all a reflection of me and I wanted to do it well.

As I grew, I opted to express myself in the performing arts participating in over 90 theatrical performances and productions
through school and beyond.  The theater arts taught me a great deal about teamwork and human nature all of which I have
put to good use. Through character development I learned to become another person, if only for a little while. I felt their
emotions, understood their motives and deeds.  I was enriched.  The ability to look inward and self-analyze I credit to this
experience.

In the mid-1990s, I had the good fortune of being offered a position with one of the most respected leading contemporary
artists of the time. She needed help managing her art business and I welcomed the opportunity to assist even though I
lacked fine art experience or formal art education. The many years spent in the employ of this artist, working in the world of
professional fine art, left an indelible mark on my life.  It was a bountiful and extremely challenging experience that I will
never forget.

It was not until 2007 that I decided to focus on my own art. Self-taught, I started with skills and understandings that I had
fostered in my youth. In the beginning there was a propensity to draw and paint with a slant toward perfection - I
concentrated on creating and “staying within the lines” attempting to conform to expectations. The result of this effort is a
vast collection of illustrative pieces that have been exhibited mostly in New York City.  A few of which can be seen here.  I
am proud of my illustrative work - they are labor intensive and striking pieces that clearly convey mood and intent.

However, in search of what you might call a "greater truth" I have intentionally moved away from rational or more formal
concepts of art.  My current goal is to derive results that a logical process cannot achieve. To color outside of the lines.  As
a result many free-associated ideas have been realized in several new pieces within an array of artistic mediums.  Striving
to remove ego and willful execution from my work, I seek to encourage the irrational hopefully leading to new, more
profound, experiences.

If  my work has a external mission it is this - to provoke a response; To get you thinking.  If you stop to ponder it, to consider
it's measure, then I am grateful.
